9 months are about to end, and Kollywood is yet to find a blockbuster!
If no blockbuster emerges in the final quarter, the situation will become worse for Kollywood, which has just five to ten films that have avoided the tag of a commercial failure this year. Even the best weren’t spared.
For example, ‘GOAT’ or ‘The Greatest of all Time’ has earned more than 420 crores worldwide, making it the highest grossing Tamil movie of 2024. However, its budget is itself 400 crores. For the domestic collections, the lesser said the better.
Even ‘Indian 2’ earned 151 crores worldwide. However, this was of no use, since the movie’s budget was between 250 to 300 crores. The movie was expected to give S. Shankar and

an unassailable lead over others throughout the nation. However, the sequel to ‘Indian’ [which released in 1996] turned out to be one of the rare flops for S. Shankar.
Only movies like ‘Raayan’, ‘Maharaja’, ‘Aranmanai 4’ and ‘Vaazhai’ have emerge as bonafide commercial success. ‘Raayan’ has earned the most amongst them, with 160 crores from worldwide collections. However, the budget was 75 crores, and thus ‘Raayan’ wasn’t given the tag of ‘blockbuster’.
All eyes are now on the final quarter, when movies like ‘Vettaiyan’, ‘Kanguva’, and ‘Viduthalai Part 2’ will be up for release.
