Mammootty and Mohanlal..yes, there is no doubt that they are superstars of Mollywood and in fact, their names are synonymous to success in Mollywood. But nothing is permanent except change. And it took many years in Mollywood to see a change (though stars like Jayaram and
Suresh Gopi were also vying for the top spot). Well, at present, youngsters are on a roll to prove their mettle. Here is a look at some of the youngsters of Malayalam cinema, who though may not sit in Mammootty’s and Mohanlal’s throne, but atleast are in the race.
Prithviraj has been in the industry for more than 10 years. He may not be called a newbie, yet he appears to be one since his looks make up for his age. Again, he is not so aged in reality. In fact, he and his colleague Fahadh are more or less of the same age. Prithviraj has travelled a long way to attain success. He tasted success in flicks like Swapnakoodu, Classmates, Ananthabhadram etc. Also, his performances in Thalappavu and Thirakkatha were notable. But this is only an example. Prithviraj also seemed to openly challenge the ageing superstars and behave with arrogance towards the Press. Though Prithviraj had his share of failures he didn’t seem to give up. Later, he worked on some nice projects such as Celluloid,
Ayalum Njanum Thammil, Memories etc. His arrogance towards the media gradually subsided and he gave interviews with a positive outlook. Prithviraj has proved his mettle as a producer too. Now, the fans all vouch for him and would like to see their favorite star in meaty roles. Picket 43 and
Ennu Ninte Moideen are a couple of recent hits of this star.
Premam created the same sensation as
Bangalore Days as Drishyam did to audiences outside Kerala. And the hero of the movie, Nivin Pauly, should surely be lauded for this achievement. Nivin is in no hurry to make it to superstardom but his movies showcase that he will surely reach there in a short span of time. This youngster does not come from a cine background. It was Vineeth Srinivasan who was instrumental in making Nivin a star to reckon with. Malarvadi Arts Club was a film directed by Vineeth Srinivasan, a landmark film in Nivin’s career. Also,
Thattathin Marayathu (also directed by Vineeth Srinivasan) was a roaring hit in Nivin’s career. The flick Neram made him a famous star even in Tamil Nadu. Nivin is at his best when he plays the charming boy’s character. He has a good female fan base too.
Dulquer Salman has now entered the industry to compete with none other than his own dad, Mamootty! But wait, he is just four years old in the industry. He also has huge fan following in Kollywood. Maniratnam’s O Kadhal Kanmani helped him connect with the Tamil audience. Like Nivin, Dulquer also has a commendable female fan base. Dulquer never intended to mimick his father onscreen. Also, he views successes and failures with equanimity. Neelakasham Pachakadal Chuvanna Bhoomi, BCD: American-Born Confused Desi,
Ustad Hotel and Bangalore Days are some of Dulquer’s successful films. He has also been credited with singing songs in his films and well too. His recent flicks like 100 Days of Love and Vikramadhityan sent the cash registers ringing.
