Nanjil Nandan is an Indin writer born on 31 December 1947, in Veera Narayanamangalam, Thazhakudy in Kanyakumari District to Ganapathiya Pillai and Saraswathi Ammal in Tamil Nadu. His original name is G. Subramaniam. He graduated with an MSc. degree in Mathematics. He is employed at Coimbatore's W. H. Brady and Co. He started out by working for the literary magazine Aedu published by the Bombay Tamil Sangam. His debut short tale, Viradham, appeared in the Na. Parthasarathy-run periodical Deepam in July 1975. His book Thalaikeezh Vigithangal was adapted into a Tamil movie in 2002 by Thangar Bachan, which was titled Solla Marandha Kadhai. He received the Tamil Sahitya Akademi Award in 2010 for his collection of short stories, Soodiya poo Soodarka. The Tamil film Padithurai is based on his book Ettu Thikkum Madha Yaanai.
He has written six novels, 112 short stories, two collections of short stories, five anthologies of essays, and two volumes of poetry. His works have been translated into English, Malayalam, and French, and many educational institutions now teach some of them as part of the curriculum. A book on his people, the Vellalas of Nanjilnadu, is now being written by Nanjil Nadan. Nadan received the Iyal Award and the Tamil Literary Garden's Lifetime Achievement Award for 2012. In June 2013, he formally got the honor. He earned the Sahitya Akademi award in 2010 for his compilation of short stories, Soodiya poo Soodarka, in the Tamil language category. The Tamil Literary Garden in Canada gave him a non-fiction award for the work Nathiyin Pizhaiyandru Narumpunal Inmai. Some of his other awards are the Ilakkiya Sinthanai Award, the Govt of Tamil Nadu literary award for best novel, Kasthuri Seenivasan Trust Award, Tirupur Tamil Sangam award, Kannadasan Award, and Lily Devasigamani Award.
