Manonmaniyam P. Sundaranar was a Tamil research scholar and writer of Indian origin. He is recognized for his most famous play Manonmaniyam (1891). This play was devoted to a Scottish professor Harvey, who used to teach English and Philosophy at The Maharaja's College. Sundaram also wrote a book in collaboration with Harvey, titled Some Early Sovereigns of Travancore (1897). Sundaram had a lot of respect for him; he also named his farmhouse after Harvey. Manonmaniyam was appointed as the first principal of MDT Hindu College in Tirunelveli. He was the founder of Saiva Prakasha Sabha at Trivandram and instructed Swami Vivekananda about Saiva Sidhantham. His work Nootrogai Villakkam was published in 1895.
He became a fellow member of Madras University in 1891 and joined the Royal Asiatic Society (RAS) in 1897. In 1992, his play Manonmaniyam was adapted on screen in the form of the Tamil film Manonmani. The Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in Tamil Nadu is named after him. He died in 1897, aged 42. His son was a member of the Constituent Assembly of India, a Lok Sabha Member, and a member of the Indian Parliament.
