Madurai Somasundaram’s full name is Madurai S. Somasundaram. He is popularly known as Madurai Somu. Madurai Somu was born on February 9, 1919, and died on December 9, 1989. Somu is known to be a Carnatic music vocalist. Sesha Bhagavatar, Abhirama Sastri, and Chittoor Subramanyam Pillai taught him music. Madurai Somu's career started with a concert in Tiruchendur in the year of 1934. In the early days, Madurai Somu was attracted to bhajans at the temple. He always wanted to become a vocal singer. His dedication to it was so much that he could stand in deep water and perform Sadakam.
Under the guidance of his gurus from whom he learned music, Somu went forward with his career. In the year of 1976, the Government of India awarded the Padma Shri award to Madurai Somu. Madurai Somu also won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the year 1978. In the year 1983, The Indian Arts Society awarded Madurai Somu with the Sangeetha Kalasikhamani award. Somu also received the title of "Ranjitha Ghana" in the year of 1946. At the 29th Conference during the year 1971-1972, organized by Chennai Tamil Isai Sangam, Madurai Somu was awarded the title of "Isai Perarigner."
