R Ajay Gnanamuthu was born on September 15th 1988 in Tiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu in India. He is a screenwriter and a director, who work in the Kollywood Industry. Gnanamuthu was brought up in Bangalore. He went to Bangalore’s St. John’s High School. After schoolling, he pursued Visual Communications from Loyola College in Chennai. Ajay developed an interest in filmmaking while he was in Loyola. He made several short films while he was in college. With his Visual Communications course, he simultaneously pursued a diploma in Digital Filmmaking from School of Audio Engineering (SAE) Institute, Chennai.
In 2010, he participated in the season 1 of the show “Naalaya Iyakunar”. It was a short film making contest. He managed to be among the top finalists of the show. After his stint in the reality show, he began his career as an assistant director. He worked under acclaimed film director and producer A R Murugadoss in the movies “
Thuppakki”, and “7aum Arivu”. 7aum Arivu (meaning “Seventh Sense” in English) was a sci-fi cum martial arts movie, which was directed and written by Murugadoss. The movie released in 2011 and had ‘
Shruti Haasan’ and Tamil Superstar ‘
Suriya Sivakumar’ playing the lead characters. The story revolved around the life of Bodhidharma (played by Suriya). The movie garnered a mixed response from the critics and the audiences. It made good numbers at the box office. Thuppakki (meaning “The Gun” in English) was made in the year 2012, which was an action-based film. Murugadoss again wrote and directed the flick. ‘
Kajal Aggarwal’ and Ilayathalapathy ‘
Vijay’ played the leads. Vijay played the role of an Army officer, and Kajal played the role of Nisha, Jagadish’s (Vijay) ladylove and a boxer. The film was caught in a controversy after its release when Islamic groups protested against the alleged portrayal of Muslims as traitors and terrorists. The movie was appreciated for its unique storyline and garnered huge box office collections. It was nominated in many Award shows.
After assisting Murugadoss, Ajay decided it is high-time to go solo. His first film as an independent director was “
Demonte Colony”. Ajay came up with this movie in 2015. It was a horror flick. He cast ‘
Arulnithi’ to play the protagonist Srinivasan. The movie was set in a fictional colony named Demonte Colony in Chennai. Made within a budget of INR 2 crores, the movie collected INR 27 crores, hence became a Box-Office hit. The critics also appreciated the film for its refreshing and gripping storyline. It was nominated for the SIIMA Award in the Best Film category.
