Shan Johnson

Shan Johnson was a young music director and singer. He had contributed in Malayalam and Tamil movies as a songwriter. Her first movie as a composer was ‘His Name is John’. She has given many live performances and was a part of the music band ‘The Sound Bulb’ which was established by her with her friends. She was born in Chennai to Johnson and Rani Johnson. Her father Johnson was a music composer and had composed many songs for Malayalam movies. He had won the National award for his work in the industry. Her father died of a heart attack in 2011. In 2012, she lost her brother Renn who met with a bike accident. She was a well-trained singer and had good knowledge which she had taken from her father. She used to compose songs for Malayalam movies. During her father’s death, he was working on four movies as a music composer. His projects were completed by Shan. She gave music for ‘His Name is John’ directed by T John. Shan Johnson, a singer who died on 5th February 2016 in a hotel in Chennai, India due to a massive heart attack at the young age of 29 years, was working in Chennai and living in flat in Kodambakkam. Her father was Johnson, a music composer, and director, also regarded by the name “Johnson Master” was a winner of National Award for Best Background score in 1994. She began her career in the industry as an assistant to music composer to G Devarajan in her early 20’s, and her first independent song came in the form of Aavaram. She composed songs for around 300 Malayalam movies. Shan Johnson got indulged in music in the early age because of her father, and he was her teacher as well.

He guided her throughout her life as long as he lived. She had a god gifted voice. Other than this she also worked as Marketing head at City Mall, Chennai. She had lost her brother in 2012 and after losing her father in 2011, she used to live with her mother. She began her career in the year 2013 as a music composer with the Malayalam film called “His Name Is John.” She also gave songs for the music in the movies “ Praise The Lord” which released in 2014 and in other Tamil movies, all of which were hits. She used to write her own songs and used to sing them, and most of them are Western music or Carnatic music. She also wrote a song with Hindi lyrics for the movie called Vettah. She reached her home on 4th February 2016, thursday at 9.30 pm after the recording.

She was supposed to travel to Kochi with her mother, and her mother was at their relatives house in Mylapore. Her mother tried calling her, and when she didn’t pick it up even after many attempts, she informed her friends and asked them to reach her out. Her friends went to her place and informed the police when she didn’t respond to any of the door bells and knockings. Police after arriving there broke the door and entered the room. She was lying on her bed, and there was nothing which indicated murder or suicide.

The body was sent for postmortem and doctors declared her dead due to a heart attack. She was suffering from medical problems as well and was using regular medication. Her body was buried with the bodies of her Father and Brother in Thrissur Nellikkunnu St. Sebastian Church, Thrissur. We will remember her always because of her great songs that she has given to us. May her soul rest in peace.
