Salim Kumar is a person who deserves the title of a film legend. He was born on 1969 in Kerala to parents Gangadharan and Kausalya. He has worked in nearly two hundred and fifty films, mostly in Malayalam and is a very popular public figure in Kerala. He did his higher education in BA from Maharajas College in Ernakulam, which has a reputation for nurturing budding artists. During his course at Maharajas, he had won the University title for mimicry three years in a row.
He had wanted to be a singer when he was young, but realizing his latent talent in mimicry and other performance arts; He decided to pursue acting instead. From the late 1980’s, he had been an active figure in the television industry, being the host of a comedy program for a private channel. His first appearance in films was with the 1989 movie – ‘Swantham Ennu Karuthi’. He presently resides in Paravur-Ernakulam with wife Sunitha and two children, and is still very active in the film industry, his latest film being ‘Birds With Large Wings’ in which he played the role of a headmaster in a rural school.
He has mostly played the roles of comedians and has won numerous awards for his depictions of such characters. The noticeable achievements in his career include several film fare awards and even the most prestigious National Film award, which was granted for his exemplary performance in ‘Adaminte Makan Abu’. In the movie ‘Adaminte Makan Abu’, Salim Kumar plays the role of a poor family man who has been saving money throughout his entire life to go to Mecca.
Apart from Malayalam films, his performance in the Tamil film ‘ Mariyaan’ also received a lot of appreciations. Salim Kumar also runs his mimicry troops which he calls as ‘Cochin Stallions’. The troupe has managed to give recognition to several young aspiring artists in Kerala.

He has shown himself in every aspect of acting; comedy, mimicry and going beyond his forte pushing himself more he also took serious roles in his career. Salim Kumar was born in a simple family of North Paravur. He marks his birthday as 10th October 1969. He is the youngest son of Late Gangadharan who followed principals of Sahodaran Ayyappan all his life. His mother Late Kausalya was a simple woman but great in value. He cited in one his interview his father named him Salim Kumar so that he can never get exposed and start distinguishing people on any mere quality.
He completed his education from primary to higher secondary in North Paravur from Govt. Lower Primary School and Govt. Boys High School respectively. He says he always aspired to become a singer but later decided to go with mimicry which made him famous. He won the imitation competition of university thrice when he was studying B.A from Maharajas College, Ernakulam. After that, the journey has been started for his career from stage show of Cochin Kalabhavan to being gaining experience at Arathi Theatres, Cochin for a long 4 years. Meanwhile, he was also seen as a performer in ‘ Comicola’, aired on Asianet.
His jaunty and cheerful nature can be predicted from the name of his house, ‘ Laughing Villa’. The actor is married to Sunitha and has two children named Chandu and Aromal. He has been associated with UDF political party and politician K. Karunakaran. He displayed his all-roundedness in writing as well in the book called Ishwara Vazhakkillello, which is based on his memories. He also conducts comedy troops which help to bring much new talent in the spotlight and gives them a firm platform to showcase their talent. Actor Ramesh Pisharody is one such talent he discovered during his comedy troop called Cochin Stallions.

Few months ago there were rumours of his denigrating health when he was admitted to the hospital. People spread the rumours of his liver disease later it was made clear that is because of his diabetic issues. The actor seemed highly disappointed with people and media for much misleading news.
He is a recipient of numerous prestigious awards including his 2010 National Award for best actor in Adaminte Makan Abu.
