Known for capturing enchanting visuals, Prakash Velayudhan is an Indian Cinematographer who predominantly works in Malayalam films. Prakash Velayudhan was born on 14th April in Thrissur, Kerala. He completed his schooling from JTS School, Thrissur, and pursued his Bachelor’s degree in English Literature from Sree Kerala Varma College in Kerala. Prakash went on to complete his Master’s degree in English Literature from St. Thomas College, Thrissur. Prakash married Sreena Kurur in 2010. They have a son named Manjyoth Prakash, born in 2013.
Prakash decided to become a full-time Cinematographer, after finishing his post-graduation. Due to financial situations, Prakash didn’t have a chance to study cinematography professionally and so he self-taught himself about the technicalities. Before making it as a cinematographer in the entertainment industry, Prakash worked as an event photographer in Studios.
Prakash began his career as a cinematographer in 2012 with the Malayalam movie Last Bench. Following his debut, Prakash moved to Mumbai and worked as an operating Cinematographer in the Hindi thriller film, Shivaay. The film, directed and produced by
, released in 2016. Prakash’s first short film, Opportunity, released in 2016.
Prakash returned to Malayalam cinema in 2017 with the Political drama
Oru Mexican Aparatha
. The film, which centered on the establishment of the political party, was a commercial success. Prakash received much praise for his work in the film. In the same year, they roped him in for the Malayalam comedy thriller movie, LavaKusha directed by Gireesh Mano. The year 2019 turned out to be successful for Prakash as he had multiple releases that year. Prakash made his Tollywood debut with the movie
Nuvvu Thopu Raa
directed by Harinath Babu.
In the same year, Prakash reunited with Tom Emmatty, director of Oru Mexican Aparatha, for the superhero film
. The movie received mixed reviews upon its theatrical release. His next cinematography work was for the Malayalam comedy-drama MASK ( Muhammedum Albinum Shathrukkalaaya Katha). He captured visuals for the Malayalam movie Ulta which was also his final release of 2019. With the experience of over a decade in the entertainment industry, Prakash has worked in Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi and Tamil languages.
Simultaneously with movies, Prakash has also done cinematography for documentaries, music videos, and several advertisements, including Kalyan Jewellers, Foodmazone mobile app, Kitex bed sheets, Elite rusk, Nandilath G-Mart, and many more. He made his acting debut with the short film Ring in 2017. In May 2020, American Cinematographer magazine published his interview.
