She was born in Mumbai, Maharashtra, to Shri Tangirala Raghu, an employee of RBI and a singer. Mahathi completed her schooling at St. Anthony Girls High School, Chembur, Mumbai, and later went to SIES College, Mumbai, to pursue her graduation in Commerce in 1998. Mahathi also did a PG diploma in Advertising and Public Relations from Mumbai University. She is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer and also learned Carnatic Classical music. Mahathi married a famous playback singer, Vijay Prakash. The couple has a daughter named Kavya Vijay Prakash.

Mahathi started working as a voice artist and dubbed several commercial ads for different brands in Telugu.
