Surekha Sikri

 Surekha Sikri is known for her character as Kalyani Devi in Balika Vadhu, aired on Star Plus, a top-rated TV show, especially among homemakers; even though she played a negative role and was one of those characters who made the life of the lead character miserable, she is loved by almost everyone who watch the show; the reason was her acting which gave a new life to the character. Art is what ran through her veins. Surekha Sikri studied in Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh, and after that she graduated from National School of Drama (1968),she worked with the NSD Repertory Company for over a decade until she figured out that she needed to pursue her dream and moved to Mumbai.

Surekha was born on 19^th April 1945 in New Delhi. Surekha’s father worked in the Indian Air Force. She had been in Nainital and Almora during her childhood. After completing her acting course, Surekha shifted her base to Mumbai. In 1989, she was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for her service to theater art. Surekha was married to Hemant Rege, and the couple has a son, Rahul Sikri. While playing in theater, Surekha got an opportunity to appear on the silver screen in 1978. She played in the political thriller Kissa Kursi Ka and made her first impression in the cinema. Surekha grabbed the national awards thrice for her best performances. In 2008, she was honored with the Indian Telly Award for the Best Actress in a Negative role for her excellence in Balika Vadhu, a super hit serial. She also received the Indian Telly Award for the Best Actress in a Supporting role for Balika Vadhu in 2011. Surekha had also received a Filmfare Award.

Besides playing in Bollywood films and serials, Surekha had played in Malayalam movies too. In 1998, she played in the Malayalam movie Janmadinam in the mother role. Some of her movies are Anaadi Anant, Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro, Parinati, Nazar, Karamati Coat, Little Buddha, Naseem, Sardari Begum, Sarfarosh, Dillagi, Cotton Mary, Hari-Bhari, Hasina, Zubeidaa, Deham, Kali Salwar, Mr. and Mrs. Iyer, Raghu Romeo, Raincoat, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Jo Bole So Nihaal, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye, Dev.D, Sniff, Badhaai Ho, Sheer Qorma, and Ghost Stories.
