Vijaya Mehta

Vijaya Mehta is an acclaimed Indian television film and theatre actor. She is known for her works in parallel cinemas as a director, and an actor. Baroda being her birthplace, Vijaya Mehta, originally went by the name of Vijaya Jaywant. She completed her education from the University of Mumbai, and pursued drama, and the theatre at New Delhi alongside theatre-director Ebrahim Alkazhi and Adi Marzban. Mehta co-founded the theatre group “Rangayan” with writer Vijay Tendulkar, and theatre greats Shreeram Lagoo and Arvind Deshpande. The works of Rangayan established her as a dignitary in Marathi theatres in the decade of 1960s. Mehta introduced the German playwright Bertolt Brecht into Marathi theatres with the rendition of his play “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” titled “Ajab Nyay Vartulacha.” She also worked with French playwright Eugene Ionesco in the Marathi adaptation of “The Chairs.”  Mehta alongside the German theatre director Fritz Bennewitz joined forces on various Indo-German projects inclusive of a performance of Indian playwright Bhasa’s “Mudrarakshasa.” She was the recipient of a Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1975 for her ventures in the field of Direction. The year 1981 marked Mehta’s appearance as an actress in Shyam Benegal’s “Kalyug.” She also featured in movies such as Party, Rao Saheb and Riding the Bus with My Sister. In 1985, Mehta pocketed a Best Actress Award at the Asia-Pacific Film Festival for her role in “Party.” She was also bestowed with a National Film Award for the Best Supporting Actress for “Rao Saheb.” Mehta also wrote and directed Pestonjee in 1988.  Following the death of her first husband Harin Khote, Vijaya married Farrokh Mehta.

Abhishek Varman

Abhishek Varman is a well-known Indian filmmaker, who predominantly worked in the Hindi film industry. He is the son of the popular Art Director, R Varman.  He started his career as an assistant director to Ashutosh Gowariker in the historical drama film, Jodhaa Akbar in 2008. Later, he worked as an assistant director to Karan Johar in My Name is Khan in 2010 and Student of the Year in 2012. Prior to these, he also worked as an assistant director to Raj Kanwar in the Bollywood romantic drama film, Humko Deewana Kar Gaye in 2006.  He made his major breakthrough when he debuted as a director in the romantic comedy-drama film, 2 States in 2014. The film starred Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in the lead roles and it grossed over $5.85-million worldwide. It also became the second highest overseas grosser in the year 2014, next to Salman Khan’s Jai Ho. Abhishek also won his first major award at the 60th Filmfare Awards for Best Debut Director. This year, he got nominated for Best Director at the Apsara Film Producers Guild Awards, Bollywood Hungama Surfers’ Choice Movie Awards and Awards of the International Indian Film Academy. 2 States is based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name.  There are rumours that Abhishek’s next movie after the successful film 2 States, will be entitled as Kalank, a period love story that is set in the backdrop of Partition in Lahore. The story was given to him by his mentor, Karan Johar and according to the reports he is now working on the script of this upcoming project. Karan will be producing the film under his own banner, Dharma Productions. The cast and crew are yet to be finalized.
