He has also directed two films, ‘Kaarnama’, and Gazab Tamasha, while he was also the producer in the later one. He made his TV debut with the Sony TV show, Aisa Des Hai Mera, and played a positive character of a Sardar. The show had the story of a British girl, Rusty, living in United Kingdom, with her divorced mother, Linda. She came to know that she had connections with India and decides to return. There she came to know that she was half Indian, as her father, Randheer Singh Deol, married Linda earlier. The story showcased the acceptance of her into the Deol family.

In an interview with The Hindu, he shared that he was recommended for the role of baddies in the movie, ‘Sharmeelee’, by Sunil Dutt. As those were the days to build a base in the industry, he was called for villain roles in movies. He never refused the work and did the work happily.

He is also active in the Punjabi film industry, and has acted in movies such as Rabb Ne Banaiyan Jodiean and Man Jeete Jag Jeet.

He hails from a place called Jandiala Guru, which is close to Amritsar in Punjab. He is one of those villains of the Hindi film industry that have become a cult personality. He has extensively used his talent to showcase his art in numerous roles that are over 200 in number. Ranjeet was a chosen man for his intense, well-built, characters, and he has done justice to his roles. He never looked back in his career and perfected the art of playing negative characters.

In the later years, he also tried his hand at direction, however, he did not receive the same love as he got while playing the roles that he did. He has also worked in Punjabi movies and received much appreciation. He has a son named Chiranjeev, who is also foraying into the Hindi film industry. Ranjeet wishes that his son plays the lead in movies. However, the journey of Ranjeet was a hard one. He came to Mumbai when offered a lead role in a movie, but the movie never got made. Then he got the much deserved fame when Sunil Dutt saw and admired his negative character in the movie, Sawan Bhadon and Reshma Aur Shera. Sunil Dutt then gave the reference of Ranjeet for the movie, Sharmeelee.
