Before his father’s death in 1977, the family moved to Cambridge for a year. At the age of nine, he started playing acoustic guitar and mainly plays them.He got his graduation degree from St. Stithians College in 1985.

Dave moved to New York to work for IBM for a short movie in 1986 and later in the same year joined his mother in Charlottesville, Virginia where he became a part of a local music community. He performed on stage with his friend Tim Reynolds and one of his friends, Ross Hoffman, convinced Matthew to record his songs, which became his first step towards his first professional musical appearance by the Miki Liszt Dance Academy at a modern dance performance. He sang Meaningful Love which was composed by John D’earth and Dawn Thompson. In 1991, he brewed the idea of forming his band, the Dave Matthews Band in Charlottesville, Virginia with LeRoi Moore, Carter Beauford, Stefan Lessard, Peter Griesar and Boyd Tinsley and primarily focused on song writing and performing for the same. The band first performed on March 14, 1991, at Trax Nightclub in Charlottesville. Matthew was taken aback when his older sister, Anne, was murdered by her husband, in the year 1994. This event changed his lookout on life which was observed in few of his songs as well. He dedicated his performance in the memory of his sister when he was staged with Tim Reynolds. Since then, he has given many solo performances.

In the tenure of ten years from 2000 to 2010, his band sold a lot more tickets as compared to the other bands in North America.Later in the year 2003, he released a solo album, Some Devil, whose single Gravedigger won a Grammy Award in 2004. In 2011, Dave shook hands with Steve Reeder and Sean McKenzie, the wine makers and created Dreaming Tree Wines.Before getting popular with music, Matthew was an amateur actor who appeared in several onstage productions at Charlottesville’s Offstage Theatreand Live Arts theatrein the early 1990s. He was also a part of casting team and performer in Before the Music Dies, a much-known music documentary. With the release of their latest album Away From the World, in 2012, the band became the first band to have six back-to-back studio albums ranking as number one on the Billboard charts.
