(NY) to Patricia (née Hammond), a Violinist, and Howard Fuller Isham, who taught humanities at the University. In his initial days, Isham studied Piano and Violin. However, he was interested and inclined towards trumpet. At 15, Isham used to perform with Oakland and San Francisco symphonies. After moving to San Francisco, he formed a band called Group 87. They released Group 87 (1980) and A Career in Dada Processing (1984).
It was 1983 when he made his solo debut with the album Vapor Drawings. Billboard chart listed this album. His voice and album impressed director Carroll Ballard, who assigned him to compose a piece of music, Disney’s Never Cry Wolf. This work marked the beginning of his journey as a film composer. In 1991, his album Mark Isham received a Grammy Award. His album Castilia (1988) and Tibet (1989) received Grammy Nominations. In 1955, he released Blue Sun, featured in Downbeat’s; “Top 100 Jazz Albums of the Decade”. His album Miles Remembered: The Silent Way Project (1999) was named by the London Times as “Best Jazz Album”. Isham's musical composition for the film "A River Runs Through It" (1992) got him nominations for both an Academy Award and a Grammy Award for Best Score. In 1992, he released his first orchestral masterpiece, "Five Stories for Trumpet and Orchestra.".
