Maria Bello is an American actress, producer and writer, who was born in Pennsylvania. Her parents are Kathy and Joe Bello. While her mother, Kathy, was a school nurse and teacher of Polish American origin, her father was an Italian American contractor from Italy. Bello was born in a Roman Catholic family.
She graduated from Archbishop John Carroll High School in Pennsylvania and majored in Political Science at Villanova University. Being cast in the TV spy series Mr. and Mrs. Smith was her breakthrough on the small (Silver screen is for films) screen. Then she appeared as Dr. Anna Del Amico, a pediatrician, in the final few episodes of the third season of the medical drama show ER and was a regular cast member during its fourth season. She starred in a hit movie titled Coyote Ugly, where she delivered a spectacular performance. It also focused on ending domestic violence within communities. Bello is also an active board member of Darfur Women Action Group (DWAG), an NGO that undertakes activism on behalf of genocide victims of the Darfur Conflict. Bello has a son with her former boyfriend Dan McDermott. She has also written about having a same-sex relationship with her partner and friend Clare Munn. She also published a book, Whatever Love Is Love: Questioning the Labels We Give Ourselves (Dey Street Books, April 28, 2015).
