He is a son of Fredrick Walker Gwynne and Dorothy Ficken Gwynne. Fredrick had two siblings Dorothy Gwynne and Bowers Gwynne who both died at a very young age. Fredrick grew up in Tuxedo Park, New York. He spent the most amount of his childhood in South Carolina, Florida, and Colorado as his father used to travel a lot. Fred had his schooling from Groton School, Massachusetts. He later attended Harvard University and was graduated in 1951. Fred joined the Brattle Theatre in 1951 after his graduation.
He then moved to New York. He made his first cinematic appearance in 1954 with “On The Waterfront” where he played a small role. He then appeared in the TV show “Car 54, Where are you?” as Officer Francis Muldoon. He also acted in “The Munsters” (1963-1966) as Herman Munster. Fred married a woman named Jean Foxy Reynard in 1952. They got divorced in the year 1980 with unknown reasons. They had five children together whose names are Gaynor, Kieron, Evan, Madyn, and Dylan. Later in 1988, he got married for the second time as he married Deborah Flater. Fred Gwynne died on the 2nd of July 1993 due to some pancreatic cancer complications in his home in Taneytown, Maryland. He is buried at Sandy Mount United Methodist Church Cemetery which is in Finksburg, Maryland.
