Eddie Albert was an American film actor and an activist, known for his roles in movies such as 'Roman Holiday', 'The Heartbreak Kid', 'The Longest Yard', and 'Brother Rat', among many others. Albert is also the recipient of an Academy Award for his supporting role of Irving Radovich in 'Roman Holiday'. Albert has also featured in television shows such as 'Green Acres', 'Switch', and 'Falcon Crest'.
Albert was born to parents, Frank Daniel and Julia Jones in Illinois. Later on, Albert’s family relocated to Minneapolis in Minnesota, where he took up the job of a newspaper delivery boy at the young age of six. Albert pursued his education at the Central High School in Minneapolis, and later on, also majored in business at the University of Minnesota. The stock market crash of 1929 saw Albert being unemployed, but to earn a living, he served as a nightclub singer and worked as an insurance agent. After serving as a host to the show for three years, Warner Bros. signed Albert to a movie contract. Albert started his film career in 1938 with the William Keighley directed 'Brother Rat'. The following year saw Albert in the musical 'On Your Toes' and in the Priscilla Lane starrer 'Four Wives'. In 1940, Albert featured in the Ray Enright directed 'Brother Rat and a Baby', alongside Rosemary Lane in 'An Angel from Texas', the Curtis Bernhardt directed 'My Love Came Back', and in William Dieterle’s 'A Dispatch from Reuters'. The early 40s also saw Albert in Benjamin Stoloff’s 'The Great Mr. Nobody', the sequel 'Four Mothers', the Ray Enright directed 'Thieves Fall Out', Richard Wallace’s war drama 'Bombardier', and Karl Tunberg’s 'You Gotta Stay Happy', among many others. The decade of the 50s featured Albert in numerous movies, some of which are William Wyler’s romantic comedy 'Roman Holiday', the Henry King-directed 'The Sun Also Rises', the Anthony Asquith directed wartime drama 'Orders to Kill', and Charles Vidor’s musical 'The Joker is Wild'. Albert was also a well-known activist, and his production house Eddie Albert Production often financed various environmental documentaries and educational films. Albert also served as the chairperson to the Boy Scouts of America youth organization. Albert was also associated with the National Recreation and Park Association and the United Stated Department of Energy. In 1945, Albert tied the knot with the Mexican actress, Margo, and is also the father of a son and an adopted daughter.
On the 26th of May, 2005, Albert passed away as a result of prolonged Pneumonia. Albert was bestowed with the 6441st Hollywood Walk of Fame Star.
