Veteran actor Cliff was a serious and talented American actor. Robertson was a successful and famous lead actor during his time. He was not a major star but his performance was consistent and well praised by the people. Following both, stage and television experience, he made his film debut in ‘Picnic’ in a supporting role in 1955. He then played John Crawford’s deranged young husband in Autumn Leaves in 1956. He was given the lead in films of good quality after his performances in supporting role.
He performed in lead for The Naked And The Dead in 1958, ‘Gidget’ in 1959, and The Big Show in 1961. He was quite satisfied with his performances. He was not in the race of becoming a mega star, but delivering his best was his motive. But as always the audiences in a lead actor always look for the star. Then, with this not so satisfied big screen work, he entered into television. He appeared in the lead role of the TV adaptation of the movie Days Of Wine And Roses.

But, the public didn’t notice him before ‘JFK’. He was picked up by the President himself, Mr. John F. Kennedy, to portray him in the 1963 movie ‘PT 109’ based on World War 2. Robertson gave some of his best performances in the movie The Best Man in 1964 where he played a cruel politician running for the presidential election. His role was a current version of Mosca in Ben Johnson’s ‘Volpone, The Honey Pot’ in 1967. His most memorable character was in the movie ‘Charly’ as a mentally retired person in 1968. This is the movie after which he was critically acclaimed as a best actor. Not just this, he won the an Academy Award for the Best Actor in male.
His success allowed him to appear in some great movies throughout the 1970’s , such as ‘Obsession’, ‘The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid’ and Too Late The Hero. He also directed, acted, as well as co-produced ‘J.W. Coop’, a drama movie from 1971 and less interestingly The Pilot in 1980. He had supporting roles in Escape from L. A and ‘Spiderman’ in 2002.
