After doing some small roles in few movies at the beginning of his career, Kanes appeared in ‘My Blueberry Nights’ which was a 2007 romantic-drama directed by Wong Kar Wai. This was Wong’s first feature film in English. The screenplay was by Wong and Lawrence Block.

He had normally acted in supporting roles in every movie or even TV serials. He was never offered to do a lead role in TV or film even. For instance, in the year 2015 in the movie 'The visit’, he acted as a dad of actor Ed Oxenbould.

He directed a documentary, ‘The Last Old Master' and another documentary 'Community Starts at Home' which was written by Benjamin himself. For TV series, 'Stay Regular' he had directed just six episodes. His best screenplay and direction was for a movie titled, ' Catalyst: Izzy’ which was a dark comedy about the relationship of three friends and how after time they have grown apart.

He was also the producer of 'Stay Regular', which he directed even. In the same manner for another documentary 'Community Stars at Home’, he was a director-cum-producer.
