He is the son of a lawyer, Myra McTiernan, and actor, John McTiernan Sr. He is the former husband of the film producer, Donna Dubrow. They got married in 1988 and divorced in 1997. His second wife was Kate Harrington, who was a costume designer by profession. They got married in 2003 and after nine years of togetherness, they parted ways. He then got hitched to Gail Sistrunk in 2012 and the couple is still together.
He is the father of Isabella Ruby Montecelli, John Jack Clarence, and Truman Elizabeth. John did his schooling from the Juilliard School in New York City. He is an alumnus of the AFI Conservatory in Los Angeles, California. He did his Masters in Fine Arts from AFIC. John started his career in film-making from 1986 onwards. His forte was action films.
His first directorial debut was in a feature film, 'Nomads' in 1986. This movie was of horror and thriller genre based on the life of a French anthropologist who had a deep knowledge about the nomadic people. John has also been convicted of many criminal charges. In 2006, the federal court charged him with making false statements to the FBI agents. In October 2008, he was sentenced to four months in prison. In 2006, his ex-wife Donna Dubrow filed an FIR against him for breaching her privacy and also for taping her phone calls while their divorce negotiations were on. He went bankrupt in the year 2013 while his legal battle was on and this made it difficult for him to even pay the fees of his lawyer.
