Lee Chen is a well-known English actress from China. She was born in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, and grew up in a small town called Tumotezuoqi. At the very young age of six, she became a member of Chairman Mao’s Propaganda Performing Troupe. She began to perform in front of large groups, farmers, and soldiers. She learned to sing, dance, and recite poetry in this troupe. She completed her graduation from the University of Hawaii to earn a Bachelor's degree in English language and foreign literature.
She has also done an MFA in Theater and Dance. During her graduation days, she played the lead in multiple main-stage and late-night theatre productions and taught acting to undergraduate students. From Nanjing University Center for Chinese American Studies, she got the chance to move to the US and earned a Master’s in multicultural education. Later, she moved to Chicago and began her acting career for Dancing for You. She has bilingual abilities in Chinese and Mondrian.
Chen's first stage production was The Primary English Class, directed by Karen Erickson. After that, she performed in over fifty dance and stage shows in Chicago, Honolulu, and Los Angeles. Her original one-woman show was Life Flies, which shows her life growing up in Communist China and becoming an actress in the US. She has performed in various lead and supporting roles in short films like We Broke Up, DOE, Midlife, Love Arcadia, and Justice for Vincent.
She got the Best Actress Award in Supporting Role. Later, she got married and had two sons, Zachary and Perry. She left the acting for nine years to raise her sons. In 2011, she returned to acting and performed in various Television shows such as Veep, NCIS Los Angeles, Arrested Development, and The Joy Luck Club. She faced a lot of challenges when it came to language, as she spoke American English with a Chinese accent.
