He was born on December 16, 1963, in San Francisco, California, the USA, to Eldy, who is a nurse and political activist, and Peter Bratt Sr., who works as a sheet metal worker. His birth name was Benjamin George Bratt. Also, he has four siblings. Bratt went to the Lowell High School in San Francisco, an active member of the Lowell Forensic Society. After that, Bratt graduated from the University of California by earning a B.F.A. in 1986, where he was a part of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity.

Due to his inclined interest for acting, he enrolled in the M.F.A. program at the American Conservatory Theater, San Francisco, though he left before receiving his degree. He made the first step towards his career at the Utah Shakespearean Festival, where he featured in the television film ‘Juarez’ (1987). It gained a vast acclaim from everyone, which helped him get a supporting role in the television movie ‘Police Story: Gladiator School’ (1988). Additionally, he was seen for the very first time as Esteban in ‘Lovers, Partners & Spies’ (1988), which did not receive much appreciation at the box office.

Bratt has worked extensively in television, with roles in the ‘Knight watch’ and ‘Nasty Boys’ series. Gaining recognition is not as easy as it seems. After the bundle of failures, including ‘One Good Cop’ and ‘Shadowhunter’, he made some blockbuster appearances. His notable works consist of, ‘Bound by Honor’, ‘Demolition Man’, ‘The River Wild’, ‘Clear and Present Danger’, ‘James A. Michener's Texas’, and many others. One of his huge successes was when he portrayed Detective Reynaldo Curtis in the popular series ‘Law & Order’, which earned him worldwide credits. His work was acknowledged a lot, and therefore he was nominated for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a series.

Furthermore, he won ALMA awards for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series from American Latino Media Arts for his role in ‘Law & Order’ in 1998 and 1999. He claims that he has reached this level only because of support and love from his family and has once made a statement for them too. He has become an inspiration for many new personalities out there.
