Plot
Ramasamy is a street-smart atheist, who cons the villagers for a living. However, his life takes an interesting turn, when the village temple, his ‘primary source of income’ is shut down. Will Ramasamy look for new options, or will he do the unimaginable: reopening the temple?
Star Performances
For all the flaws, the acting performances in this film are top-notch. Santhanam does his best to live up to the expectations, trying to bridge the gap left by the absence of a strong screenplay.
However, it is the supporting cast, especially the performances of Rajendran and Nizhagal Ravi that stand out a lot. The presence of these two actors is what makes this film an entertaining experience overall.
Analysis
A film with a social message? That’s something as common in Tamil cinema as sunlight! However, with ‘Vadakkupatti Ramasamy,’ there is a difference. There is a focus on both sides of spirituality, with a dash of satire!
Since the past few years, Santhanam, known mostly for his comical roles, has been selecting some great scripts as well. Whether or not they succeed is another matter. However, the good thing about Santhanam’s script choice is that it proves him as a capable risk taker, ‘Vadakkupatti Ramasamy’ being no different.
The film is the journey of a self-proclaimed atheist’s quest to reopen a temple. The way Santhanam goes about it is hilarious, though not exactly rib-tickling to be precise. The makers take too long to build a proper narrative in this film. Karthik Yogi tries to add too many elements into one story without giving each proper space or time. Result: an entertaining film, but in bits and pieces.
However, the lack of a strong screenplay is somehow compensated by the silly humor of the film. The acting performances also ensure that the film is far from boring. Special mention to Rajendran and Nizhagal Ravi, who have lent solid support to the leading pair of Santhanam and Megha Akash with their performances.

Verdict
‘Vadakkupatti Ramasamy’ is a social drama that could have paved the way for a cult classic, if done the right way. Yet, the acting performances of the lead, as well as the supporting cast, make it an entertaining, one-time watch.
