Plot
The film details the life of E. V. Ramasamy, revered by his followers as Periyar right from childhood to his pilgrimage to Kashi, which changed his life because he understood the cruelty of the Caste System. He was denied food at choultries that only fed Brahmins and prohibited other Hindu castes from eating there. Due to extreme hunger, Ramasamy was forced to feed on leftovers from the streets. The film deals with Periyar’s struggles and experiences until his death. The film dominates E. V. Ramasamy’s political life rather than personal life. The film depicts his morals, values, and view of life. The film can be taken as a lesson on rationalism, self-respect, and courage.
Star Performance
Sathyaraj accurately reproduces Periyar’s voice, accent, and body language. Jyothirmai beautifully portrayed the innocence of Nagammai.
Analysis
The star cast did justice to their roles. The depth of Periyar’s and Rajaji’s friendship has been brought out well. The director did an excellent job in blending humor and storyline while ensuring that the film did not offend anyone’s sensibilities, especially those of Brahmins by toning down Periyar’s anti-Brahmin policies. Compared to the intense portrayal of Periyar’s anti-religion, anti-caste, and anti-God policies, one can easily say that his anti-North Indian domination and anti-Hindi policies have not been touched upon at all in the movie. The music was well-suited. The cinematography was fantastic. It can be taken as a lesson on rationalism, self-respect, and courage.

Verdict
The film is a must-watch for everyone, especially those 40 and above, as it brings nostalgia and also the people below 40, as it helps you understand a different perspective on several things and issues. It will also help the audience discover more about E. V. Ramasamy Naicker’s ideals and values in life – not to mention his sense of humor.
