Gnana Rajasekaran is an Indian filmmaker. He is also a screenwriter and playwright. He was born on 23 January 1953 in Vellore District, Tamil Nadu. He is also a retired IAS officer. His parents were Gnanaprakasam and Sharadambal, and both of them were teachers. He graduated from Sacred Heart College with BSc in Physics. He attained a master's degree in physics at Presidency College, Chennai. He worked as a technical officer after he graduated from the Intelligence Bureau in Mumbai. In 1985 he got married to Sakunthala Chidambaram. He was allotted the Kerala Cadre in 1983 to the Indian Administrative Service. He published an allegorical book Yanai Kuthirai Ottagam before beginning his career in film-making.
His debut film Mogamul is based on the novel written by Thi. Janakiraman. He also directed various short films like Oru Kan, Oru Paarvai, Vivaram Onum Ariyam, and many more. In 1995 he won Indira Gandhi Award for Best Debut Film as a Director for Mogamul. In 2000, he won the National Film Award for the best feature film in Tamil and Tamil Nadu State film award special prize for Bharathi. In 2007 he won the National Film Award for the best feature film in Tamil and Tamil Nadu state film award a special prize for the movie Periyar, and In 2014 he won Tamil Nadu state film award for best film for the movie Ramanujan.
