The Tamil film industry or Kollywood is a leading regional film industry in India. Every year it shells out great movies that are loved and appreciated by the entire country. Many of these films are dubbed in Hindi for the national audience because of their popularity. Some of them are even remade with major Bollywood stars appearing in them. Either way, this increases the credibility of the Tamil industry. Here is a list of ten Tamil films which were dubbed in Hindi for the national audience.

1. Bahubali – The Beginning

Bahubali: The Beginning is a fantasy film directed by S. S. Rajamouli and released in the year 2015. It was based on an ancient fictional kingdom named Mahishmati, located in South India. The story follows Bahubali Senior and his son, Bahubali Junior, and their lives, along with the struggle for power in the kingdom. The film stars popular South Indian actors like Prabhas, Anushka Shetty, Rana Daggubati, Tamannaah, Ramya Krishnan, Sathyaraj, Nassar, etc. The film was dubbed in Hindi as well and became immensely successful all over the country. Its sequel will release this year.

2. Enthiran

Directed by S. Shankar and starring superstar Rajinikanth in the lead role, Enthiran was a science fiction movie about a robot which learns to think and develop emotions like a human being. That leads to disaster and a conflict with the scientist who made the robot. Rajinikanth had a double role in the film, as the scientist and the robot. The female lead was played by Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. The film also starred Danny Denzongpa, Sabu Cyril, Santhanam, Karunas, etc. The film was dubbed in Hindi and released with the name Robot.

3. Bombay

Bombay was a 1995 Tamil film directed by Mani Ratnam. It starred Manisha Koirala and Arvind Swamy in the lead roles. The movie was based on a legendary love story of two people belonging to different religions. The communal riots in the city of Bombay formed a backdrop for this film. The movie became critically and commercially successful for its theme, performances, and music. It was dubbed in Hindi and released alongside the original Tamil version. The film won many awards and got acclaim as a socially aware film. However, the film also garnered some controversy due to its religious themes.

4. Roja

Roja is a Tamil film based on the theme of terrorist attacks in India. It also focuses on the love story of Roja and Rishi against the backdrop of the terrorist activities. The film starred Madhoo and Arvind Swamy and was directed by Mani Ratnam. The film became extremely famous for its music and performances. The movie also had actors like Nassar, Pankaj Kapoor, Shiva Rindani, Vaishnavi, etc. Roja was inspired by a real event witnessed by Mani Ratnam in Kashmir. The film touched the hearts of all the viewers.

5. Sivaji

Sivaji is a Tamil movie starring Rajinikanth and Shriya Saran in the main roles. It is directed by S. Shankar and released in the year 2007. The film also released in Hindi with the title of Sivaji, The Boss. It is based on a software architect who fights with the corrupt system to help the needy and the poor. The film became a bit hit when it released and was dubbed in Telugu and Hindi. It also won a National Award. Some other actors starring in the film are Vivek, Suman, Manivannan, Raghuvaran, etc.

6. Dasavathaaram

K. S. Ravikumar’s Dasavathaaram was a science fiction film released in the year 2008. It starred Kamal Haasan, Asin, Jayaprada, Raghuram, and Mallika Sherawat. The film was based on the life of various individuals beginning from the 12th century and continuing up to the 21st century. The story also features a dangerous bio-weapon and the coming of a tsunami. The film was dubbed in Telugu as well. Its Hindi version was released about a year later. It had the title of Dashavtar. The film did well commercially.

7. Kabali

Kabali released in 2016 and the director was Pa. Ranjith. The film featured Rajinikanth as a don based in Kuala Lumpur. The movie focuses on the journey of the Don Kabali after he is released from prison and when he goes in search of his missing family. The film had actors such as Winston Chao, Nassar, Radhika Apte, Kishore, Dinesh, Dhansika, Kalaiyarasan, etc. The Hindi version, also titled Kabali, was released simultaneously. It also had dubbed version in other languages like Telugu, Malay, and Malayalam.

8. Kochadaiiyaan

Another Rajinikanth film, Kochadaiiyaan was directed by his daughter, Soundarya R. Ashwin. The film is an epic fiction with a historical theme. It has been captured as a photorealistic motion film wherein the animated characters resemble the appearance of the actors who are playing them. It is the first such movie in the country of India and was quite hyped before its release. Besides Rajinikanth, the film also starred Deepika Padukone, R. Sarathkumar, Shobana, Aadhi, Jackie Shroff, Nassar, Rukmini Vijayakumar, etc. The film was dubbed in Hindi and released as well.

9. Jeans

Jeans is a Tamil romantic comedy directed by S. Shankar and starred Prashanth, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Nassar, Lakshmi, Raju Sundaram, Raadhika, Senthil, etc. Then it was the costliest Indian film ever. The film became hugely successful after the release of its Tamil version. It was then dubbed and released in Hindi as well as Telugu with the same title. It was hugely appreciated and even sent to the Oscars as that year’s Indian nomination. The film shows the beauty of relationships and family with a heartwarming love story at its core.

10. Veeram

The 2014 Tamil film, Veeram, is an action drama directed by Siva and starring Ajith Kumar, Tamannaah, Bala, Vidharth, Nassar, Santhanam, Pradeep Rawat, etc. It was dubbed in Hindi and released with the title Veeram The Powerman. It was also dubbed in Telugu, and it is being remade in Telugu again. It is based on a man named Vinayagam who lives in a village with his brothers. The story focuses on the brothers’ struggle to find love for Vinayagam as they want to get married themselves after their brother does so. The film became quite successful after its release.
