Plot

The story of the film revolves around a young boy, Tony Soprano. Tony travels with his mentor, Dickie Moltisanti, to welcome Dickie's father, “Hollywood Dick” Moltisanti, and his Italian wife, Giuseppina. Dickie’s father serves as a soldier in the Dimeo Crime Family. The members consist of Paulie Walnuts, Silvio Dante, Pussy Bon, and his father “Buddha”, Junior and his brother Johnny Soprano. A riot breaks in Newark after a black driver was robbed and assaulted by some white policemen. Harold McBrayer, Dickie’s associate, kills a police man and had to flee to North California to escape.

At a carnival, Johnny and his brother Junior engage in violence, and Johnny is sentenced to four years of imprisonment. One day, during an argument Dickie’s father kicks his wife down a flight of stairs. When Dickie gets to know about this he confronts his father, and amid the argument Dickie kills his father in anger and dumps the body in a warehouse, and burns that warehouse.

Dickie meets his father’s twin, Sally, who is serving a life sentence in charge of murder. On the other side Tony is suspended from school for involving in Gambling, but Dickie makes him promise to not to break rules. Few years later, Johnny is released from prison and Holand also returns to Newark and they are determined to form a black criminal family. Harold kills Dickie’s man and steals extortion money. During a shootout between Holand and Johnny Boy’s crew, Buddha is killed.

At Buddha’s wake, Junior slips from the stairs causing Dickie to laugh, infuriating Junior. Later, Dickie meets with Giuseppina and promises her to finance a parlour for her to run, but during a beach walk when she reveals about her affair with Holand, Dickie gets infuriated and drowns her into the ocean. Dickie once again meets Sally, who advised him to stay away from Tony’s life, as everyone close to Dickie ends up dying.

Dickie first listens to his advice and starts avoiding Tony but later, on Silvio advice decides to reconcile with Tony. While going home, Dickie is killed by an unknown man, who kills Dickie on Junior’s orders.

Star performance

Michael Gandolfini, as Tony Soprano, is outstanding. His dialogue delivery and performance as Tony were excellent.

Alessandro Nivola, as Dickie did a great job. He got the maximum screen space, and he utilized it excellently.

Analysis

The film “Many Saints of Newark” is the prequel to the Sopranos Series. But, like the other series of Sopranos, the storyline of the movie is not very interesting. The story is mainly focused on Dickie.

The director of the film is Alan Taylor. He has done a great job. He crafted this film brilliantly. The movie gives complete Gangster movie Vibes.

The cinematography of the film is done by Karmer Morgenthan. He did his work excellently. Editing work is also worth appreciation and is also done as the screenplay demands.

The dialogues in the movie are outstanding. The star cast of the film was great, and each one of them gave their best in their performances.

What’s there?

  • Good direction
  • Good dialogues
  • Wonderful performances by Starcast

What’s not there?

  • Not so interesting storyline.

Verdict

“ The Many Saints Of Newark ” is something which you won’t regret watching.
