Plot

The film’s protagonists are Amelia Wren, played by Felicity Jones, and James Glaisher, played by Eddie Redmayne. James Glaisher was a scientist trying to secure funding to prove that weather could be predicted but fails to do so because he was rejected by the Royal Society. At a party James meets Amelia Wren and asks her to be his pilot for a privately funded expedition to prove his theory about weather. Amelia agrees to be James’s pilot. In 1862, they set off on their exhibition in a hot air balloon. At first their journey goes well, but when they rise higher, they run into a violent storm which greatly affects their balloon. The film follows their expedition as they run into several problems and struggle to survive.

Star Performance

Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones deliver good performances. They perfectly portray characters that are polar opposites; Amelia has a free, adventurous spirit while James is a cautious man.

Analysis

The film portrays the near-death experience the characters go through during their expedition. These scenes have great cinematography, camera work, and computer graphics.

What’s There?

• An inspiring story about a scientist and a pilot, risking their life for scientific advancement

• Great performances from Felicity Jones and Eddie Redmayne

• The film has good cinematography and graphics

What’s Not There?

• The film has a weak script and characters are not well-written

• The plot is flimsy at times

Verdict

“The Aeronauts” has an inspiring story based on real-life scientist James Glaisher and Amelia Wren’s character is based on Glaisher’s partner Henry Coxwell and Sophie Blanchard, a pilot who worked with Glaisher. The film would be a good watch for adventure and drama enthusiasts.
