Plot

The film follows Russian native Dominika Egorova, played by Jennifer Lawrence. Dominika was a successful Ballerina but was struggling with taking care of her ill mother after an injury that ruined her career. Her uncle Ivan, played by Matthias Schoenaerts, who was the deputy director of SVR, the Russian foreign intelligence services to recruited her to work for SVR as an operative. Dominika was sent to State School 4 which trained women to become ‘sparrows’, operatives who seduced their targets to get desired secrets. Dominika was trained and sent to Budapest on a mission to seduce Nate Nash, played by Joel Edgerton, and get the identity of the SVR mole who works with him. Nate soon discovers that Dominika is a Russian operative and asks her to defect and help him. The film follows Dominika as she navigates her life as a Russian operative, and makes some difficult choices to secure her and her mother’s lives.

Star Performance

Jennifer Lawrence delivers a spectacular performance. She perfectly portrays Dominika’s struggles, her compulsions, and fight for survival. Joel Edgerton also gives a good performance although they do not have much chemistry together.

Analysis

The film was adapted from the novel “Red Sparrow” by Jason Matthews. The film is adapted very well, and stays true to the novel. Since the novel is complex, the film dilutes and simplifies the story too much.

What’s There?

• The film has a plethora of action scenes

What’s Not There?

• The story is thinned out and over-simplified as compared to the novel

• The runtime of the film makes it boring, some brevity would have been preferred

Verdict

“Red Sparrow” is the story of the making of a spy. It describes the tale of a ‘sparrow’ of Russia who is trained to be deadly and seductive. The film would have been a lot more entertaining if the runtime was cut short. Jennifer Lawrence gives a stellar performance. So, the film would be a good watch for thriller enthusiasts and Jennifer Lawrence’s fans.
