Plot
Apart from the details above, the movie has a basic premise that primarily revolves around a lady in her prime who tries her might to overcome a grievous incident. Lisa ( Paquin) gets involved in a bus accident that runs over Margaret. Lisa then goes on to file a case against the bus driver. Meanwhile, Lisa has her dosage of trouble: her rock-hard relationship with her mom and her mother’s boyfriend, Lisa’s whimsical relationship with her math teacher and other allied issues at school. Finally, how Lisa manages to get justice for the woman who was knocked down and how she re-kindles her relationship with her mother forms the rest of the plot.
What’s there and what’s not?
For a drama-tale with a basic premise, it is not worth the shot to spend three hours. Therefore, the 150 minute trimmed down version should be ideally appropriate. However, Paquin, who is an ideal choice for the cast of Lisa, should be applauded. She displays emotions appropriately during her turmoil and has also glorified her performance in the end. She is a rock for the entire movie. Not so incidentally, she also went onto to clinch the 2011 Best Actress Award from the London Film Critics Circle. The cinematography, which was handled by Ryszard Lenczewski also deserves special praise for the able handling of the camera. Also, the movie has soul-stirring soundtracks which add a complete sense to the movie. The composer Nico Muhly has had ample scope to display his best.
Verdict
For all those interested in a drama with a natural and organic plot, Margaret is an apt choice. However, there could have been several occasions where the high trauma of Lisa could have been trimmed. Hence, the movie can pass off as one time watch.
