Macbeth is an epic historical drama film based on William Shakespeare’s famous play “Macbeth."  The director is Justin Kurzel. This film is collectively written by Todd Louiso, Jacob Koskoff, and Michael Lesslie. It stars Michael Fassbender in the role of Macbeth and Marion Cotillard in the role of Lady Macbeth. The rest of the cast includes Paddy Considine, Sean Harris, Jack Reynor, Elizabeth Debicki, David Thewlis, David Hayman, Brian Nickles, and others. The film has been produced by Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, and Laura Hastings-Smith. Adam Arkapaw is the cinematographer. The editor is Chris Dickens. Music is done by Jed Kurzel.

Plot

The plot of the movie mixes witchcraft, prophecy, and murder. The story has been primarily set in Scotland. The story revolves around a Scottish lord’s rise to power after receiving a prophecy from a trio of witches. The opening scene begins with Macbeth grieving at their child’s funeral. After that, Macbeth leads King Duncan’s troops into a battle and returns victorious. On his way back, he meets with the three mysterious witches who hail Macbeth as the Thane of Cawdor and future king. The second act opens with Duncan hearing about his victory and executing the Thane of Cawdor for being a traitor. He gives the title to Macbeth, proving the prophecy right. When Lady Macbeth hears about the prophecy from her husband, she urges him to kill Duncan and be the king himself to fulfill the prophecy. During the feast, Duncan announces Malcolm as his heir. Despite his hesitation, Macbeth’s wife persuades him to kill the King. At night, Macbeth encounters a boy soldier’s ghost, who gives him a dagger, and drags him to Duncan’s tent. Macbeth slays him. Later, he meets Lady Macbeth in the church and they wash their hands to wash away their deeds. Act 3 begins in the morning when Macduff finds Duncan dead. Macbeth even kills the servants to prevent their denial. As Malcolm has fled, suspicion falls upon him. As a result, Macbeth gets crowned. However, he feels this doesn’t have any advantage. He doesn’t have an heir and soon the crown will pass to Banquo and his son, Fleance. He sends assassins to kill both of them, but Fleance escapes successfully. Macbeth again encounters a ghost and talks to him. This time it’s Banquo’s. Macbeth starts losing his mind gradually. In Act 4, he meets the witches again. They warn him to be aware of Macduff. The boy soldier’s ghost tells him that he will not get killed by a man born of a woman. Macbeth believes that he is immortal which is not the case. He orders to kill Macduff’s family and servants. Hearing about the death of his family, Macduff swears revenge on Macbeth. In the last act, Lady Macbeth returns to the church, regretting her sins and bloody hands. Macbeth soon becomes mad and a tyrant. As he learns about his wife’s death, he delivers the famous soliloquy, “tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow." He then hears the news that Malcolm, is bringing an army against him. Macbeth confidently battles Macduff. But as Macduff tells him that he was untimely ripped from his mother’s womb, Macbeth drops his dagger. He regrets his sins but does not agree  to bow before Malcolm. He is killed. Ultimately, Malcolm becomes the king and goes to his castle.

Star performance

Michael is fabulous in his role of Macbeth. He perfectly portrayed the greed, madness, anger, tyranny, and guilt of Macbeth. His acting was on point, along with Marion’s acting. She perfectly depicts the character of Lady Macbeth. The supporting cast members were also great in their characters. The performances of the actors become a plus point for the movie.

Analysis

Driven by ambition and his wife’s greed, Macbeth commits sins of killing people. He unquestioningly believes the prophecies of the three witches and wants to make those come true. However, that leads him to lose his mind, he starts seeing ghosts and gradually becomes mad. He turns into an angry tyrant. Just like the play itself, the movie also depicts the physical and psychological agony that Macbeth goes through. It portrays the damaging effects of political ambition on those people who want absolute power for themselves. The scriptwriter did a commendable job of keeping the Shakespearean language intact in the dialogues. The originality of the play is maintained well in the movie. The execution of the battle scenes and the appearances of the ghostly abominations are perfect. The makeup team did a great job portraying the characters in an indeed period drama manner. The cinematography is top-notch. Kurzel’s direction is on point as he maintains the thrill throughout the film.
