The story deals with the happenings in the life of a soldier, who returns from World War I in Europe. He moves with his wife to a lighthouse, where they lived happily for many years. When they see a baby girl in a lifeboat, which washes up ashore, they adopt the child and care her as their daughter. The tragedy begins when the real mother comes in.
