Plot

In 1988, a former stockbroker Nicholas Winton is cleaning up the clutter in his office. He finds some old documents related to BCRC, where he had once worked. He decides to donate it initially to a museum, but it ends up in the hands of BBC, who use for their show ‘That’s Life’. Who is this Nicholas Winton, and what is his connection with the Holocaust?

Star Performances

The writers and the actors are the soul of this movie.

The way the writers have adopted the interesting life of Sir Nicholas Winton is just brilliant.

Sir Anthony Hopkins is just phenomenal as always. However, Johnny Flynn, who plays his younger version, is the star factor of this movie. Helena Bonham Carter has delivered yet another banger with her performance in this movie.

Analysis

There is one quote we have often heard in movies. ‘Whoever saves one life, saves the world entire’. We’ve all heard of how Oskar Schindler gave it his all to save more than 1000 Jews, as immortalized in the famous movie ‘Schindler’s List’.

But how many of us have heard of Sir Nicholas George Winton? If you haven’t, do not worry. James Hawes is here with ‘One Life’, which is based on Sir Nicholas’s untold journey of saving almost 700 Jewish children from falling into the hands of the ruthless Nazis, which was named the Czech Kindertransport [German for Children’s Transport]

The movie begins with an old Nicholas landing up on the BBC sets for the program ‘That’s Life’, which gave his unsung story a whole new platform. The way the story is told is not only moving, but also intense and engaging.

Anthony Hopkins has delivered yet another fantastic performance. His acting is like fine wine: it only gets better with age. Johnny Flynn is another welcome surprise. Though his performance may not be as flawless as that of Liam Neeson I don't know who you are. I don't know wha >> Read More... in ‘Schindler’s List’, he does make an honest attempt with the same. Helena Bonham Carter as Nicholas’ mother is just fantastic. Not many know that her maternal grandfather had also played an important role in saving many Jewish families from being persecuted in occupied France.

What’s There

  • A solid, performance-oriented script
  • Brilliant performances by Sir Anthony Hopkins and Johnny Flynn
  • Slick editing
  • Strong support from Helena Bonham Carter

What’s Not There

  • Minor flaws with the pace

Verdict

‘One Life’ is a realistic take on the evacuation of Jewish children during the Second World War. The movie packs a solid punch, and the acting performances of Sir Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, and Helena Bonham Carter, are only the icing on the cake. You should give this movie a try if you haven’t!
