Plot: The story opens up in 1970; Shasta Fay Hepworth visits her ex-boyfriend Larry Sportello, who is a private investigator and a complete hippie. Shasta asks for Larry’s help as she and her boyfriend is troubled by her boyfriend’s ex-girlfriend who in turn is planning to take away all the wealth that her boyfriend possesses. Later, Larry encounters Tariq Khalil, who is a member of the Black Guerilla Family. He hires Larry to trace Glen Charlock, who is the member of the Aryan Brotherhood and owns his money. Larry visits his ex’s boyfriend’s channel view estates project and forces himself into a brothel/massage parlor, he meets an employee over there, later he searches for any trace of Charlock over there but is knocked down unconscious by a baseball bat and becomes unconscious.
Later, he wakes up outside the estate and is baffled to see Charlock’s dead body next to him and is surrounded by Policemen. He is taken into custody and interrogated by Det. Christian F. “Bigfoot” Bjornsen of the LAPD. While having a conversation, Larry also finds out that Shasta’s boyfriend has disappeared without leaving any trace. Later Larry is helped by his attorney to be out of the Police custody. Larry is up for his third case in the film as he is hired by a heroin addict Hope Harlingen, who is desperately looking for her missing husband, Coy. She was informed that Coy was dead, but her belief about her husband being alive prompts her to ask Larry for help.
Later, it is revealed that Coy is a police informant and is actually alive and hiding and is desperate to return to his wife and daughter. Rest of the movie is all about how Larry battles out the odds and reveals some of the most dangerous plans made for him and successfully fends them off and sort of reconciles with Shasta as they go back to their normal lives.
Analysis: Inherent Vice has a nice concept which is spun into three sub-plots which are nice but not good enough to make it finish the winning line. Even though the plot is promising and to say commendable, the messy mixture of sub-plots results in the derailing of interest in this movie. Though the main characters have tried their best to keep the movie in one piece and drive it to its conclusion which covers up for the plot a bit. Screenplay looks breezy at one time and suddenly filled with the pace at the next instant.
Star Performances: All the big names here like Josh Brolin, Reese Witherspoon, Joaquin Phoenix, Owen Wilson have proven themselves that why they are called superstars, every character has some contribution in the life of other in this movie and which indirectly affects each one of them which is nice to see.
What's There?
• A promising plot.
• Nice screenplay.
• Brilliant performances from big actors.
What's Not There?
• The plot becomes messy at times because the sub-plots don’t mix well.
• The conclusion is unclear about the future of protagonist.
Verdict: This movie is deemed as “cult-classic”, but there are no sufficient points to call it the same, but yes this movie has a good plot which unfortunately does not live up to its expectations. You might want to give this movie one view, but that’s it.
