He initially worked in the now-defunct NBC daytime soap opera “Another World,” in the role of Ted Bancroft. He started his career with a leading role in the American drama film “King of the Gypsies” in 1978. For this show, he was nominated for Golden Globe Award for “Best Motion Picture Acting Debut – Male” in 1979 for his performance as Dave. In 1983, he was again nominated for Golden Globe Award for his role in Bob Fosse’s biographical drama film “Star 80.” He earned the third Golden Globe Award nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the thriller film “Runaway Train” in 1985.

He has also been honored with the ‘Theatre World Award’ for his Broadway debut performance in the play titled “Burn This” (1987). In 1996, he co-starred in the television miniseries version of “In Cold Blood,” in the role of Perry Smith. He also appeared in an American rock band- The Killers’ music video for their song “Miss Atomic Bomb” and “Mr. Brightside” in 2003, and Mariah Carey’s music video for the song “We Belong Together” and “It’s Like That” in 2005. In 2011, he starred in the multi-awarded independent feature film “Silver Case,” for which he got the Indie Fest Award – Award – Award of Excellence – Lead Actor. He also portrayed the recurring character of Charles Forstman in the legal drama television series “Suits.”
