when I first came across this, but after watching this movie I know why Jim Carrey is known as THE great Jim Carrey. However, that doesn’t make this flick a fantabulous must watch, but I am not being completely pessimistic about this movie. ‘

’ tells the tale of Steven Jay Russell (Jim Carrey) for whom life is a continuous toll on his miseries, after being left by his mother for adoption, and an unsuccessful family life. However, after an accident, he leaves his past life behind and turns over a new leaf. He is a gay and starts life afresh, conning people and extracting money to make ends meet and giving luxury to his boyfriend. Sadly, life again topples him from his luxury and he finds himself in prison for conning and scheming tricks that fetched him money. Again, he falls for a guy, this time named Phillip Morris (Ewan McGregor), and this is when things, again, start to topsy turvy. Pat brings Steven back to his current life, on his deathbed, and makes him recount his past events.
I Love You Phillip Morris is “gay” (pun intended) raking up some feelings too, as you see Steven’s barren life encapsulating him and almost gulping him down. However, the very life, which is his pain, comes in the form of luck and lets him enjoy, but that too in short intervals. Jim Carrey, who usually deals on the terrains of comedy, though is fulfilling the same here, also gets us with the emotions that lay open and strewn in this wonderfully sweet flick. But how? His abandonment as a child by his mother, and an unsatisfied family man with little to no hope from his wife, the audience surely get a cue over the sorrows that have struck Steven while he still somehow carries on with his life. I have to say that Jim Carrey is a wonderful and brilliant (and whatever that is written in English language to define “pinnacle”) actor, who is completely in charge of the movie. Of course, Ewan too goes hand in hand with him as his gay lover, performing idiotic and mediocre acts. However, Carrey steals it with a wild exuberance that will make the audience laugh out loud and literally vomit.
I Love You Phillip Morris reminds us about life; bitchy, arrogant, selfish, loser-some, romantic, and unknown life, but biggest of them all- prevailing. Also, built around two gay lovers, the story has thrown another perspective on how love has no boundaries, can cling between anyone, and how it never fades out. Of course, Jim Carrey is a brilliant actor, and is one of the most electrifying ecstatic madman comedian that would leave you teary eyed (of course with laughter, and a little bit of sadness too).
