Plot
Lionel Essrog, Gilbert Coney, Danny Fantl, and Tony Vermonte were rescued by detective Frank Minna from an exploitive orphanage. They currently work as detectives under him. Lionel, nicknamed “Motherless Brooklyn,” has Tourette syndrome and OCD. But it makes him a unique detective with intricate verbal and photographic ability. While working on a case, they witness Frank getting shot, who later dies. Lionel ventures into the depth of the case on which Frank was working. He meets Laura, a woman on whom Frank kept a keen eye. She works for Gabby Horowitz, who is fighting against the city hall’s decision regarding the urban place renovation. Under the tag of this urban renewal, numerous people, mainly non-white, are on the verge of homelessness. Moses Randolph is the authority who holds the ultimate power behind the progression of this plan. Lionel takes the alibi of a reporter and unfurls several pieces of information governing Moses and his hideous plan. Already visible under Randolph’s radar, Lionel and Laura get into a big mess. It leads to the secret behind Laura’s birth, leaving her devasted. Nevertheless, things change as Moses denies his plans, and Lionel forwards his collected data to the reporter he pretended to be.

Analysis
Despite several notably changing threads, the adaptation doesn’t fail to capture a gracefully entangled crime narrative.

The polished ambiance contrasts the presence of blood and bruises in decoding the case. The grasping plot line mediates a detailing liquor stealthily, thus not making it too hard to follow. But a moment’s inattention might cut the knot of happenings, leaving the viewer dismayed. In these terms, the movie is very engaging with occasional comical situations initiated by Lionel, where one laughs with him rather than at him. It speaks about significant contemporary issues heightening a vivid portrayal of power and its grip over a community, ranging from society. The fantastic cast critically adorned the characters’ designations. The direction, storyline, plot twist, and acting are on point. Yet it is often deviating and carries a sense of loss of focus. It oscillates between the creative potential and a sort of disjointed notion. The challenges of Norton’s role blended with the excellent structuring of political discrepancies landed the film several nominations. It won Best Overlooked Film in 2020. Edward Norton won the Auteur Award, and Michael Ahern and Beth Mickle received the Best Art Direction and Production Design at the Satellite Awards in 2019.

Verdict
The mystery thriller doesn’t fail to keep the viewer on heels at every step. Even though it's tiring to hold the pace amidst the many details and hints, this is one of Norton’s emerging films in his directorial journey that cannot be overlooked.
