Plot
During World War II, as an emergency measure, Private First-Class Norman Ellison is dispatched as a replacement gunner for the tank crew of ‘Fury,’ a Sherman tank headed by Sergeant Don “Wardaddy” Collier. As Norman comes to terms with the harsh truth, and attempts to adjust with the hostile tank crew, ‘Fury’ is subject to a tactical assault by the retreating Germans. Can Norman shed his hesitation, and rise to the occasion?
Star Performances
For those, who think realistic war movies are a myth, they better watch this film. Writer cum director David Ayer has made this a memorable film if not a certified masterpiece.
The ensemble cast is great. However, Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf and Logan Lerman stand out for their absolute dedication to their respective roles.
Analysis
‘Fury’ is not your regular mainstream Hollywood war flick. It gets straight to the business, without meandering anywhere. A tank with some five or six American soldiers must face a horde of Nazi soldiers. The film has a simple but unsettling message: This is war, deal with it!
‘Fury’ is far from being a poetic war saga. It is like a bullet, before you realize it, it hits you in the head. David Ayer explores the emotions of unity, bravery, and brotherhood that are not often seen in American movies. It neither demonizes war, nor romanticizes the same, and that is a good thing to start with.
The ensemble cast that plays the tank crew displays a wide range of emotions. Nobody would believe that this is the same Brad Pitt, who played the trigger-happy Lt. Aldo Raine in ‘Inglourious Basterds’ so effortlessly. Here, he is this nonsense, battle-hardened soldier, who just wants this endless struggle to get over. His comrades may not be exactly the most idealistic of men, but they know what it is like to be by each other’s side.
The showstopper, however, is Logan Lerman as PFC Norman Ellison. He shows the vulnerability of a young soldier thrust into the war at its worst. He is afraid, he is hesitant, and yet he does not want to be a quitter. The movie might not be the perfect history chapter, but if it comes to showing the emotional aspect of war, ‘Fury’ can pat its back.

Verdict
‘Fury’ may not be a ‘Saving Private Ryan,’ but it does stand in a league of its own. It lives by its slogan ‘War Never Ends Quietly,’ and the performances are like the cherry on the icing! You must not miss this film at any cost!
