Plot
Basil Brown is a local archaeologist who works at Ipswich Museum. Edith Pretty, who has an estate in Sutton Hoo, employs him in 1939. She offers him the salary, which he used to get. Later, he asks her to increase the salary, and she hiked it up by 12%. Brown excavates the burial mounds. Unfortunately, the trench collapses, and he is stuck. However, the workers dug him out and saved him. Brown ignores his wife, May’s letters, and spends time with Edith and her son, Robert. Soon, Brown finds some iron rivets of a ship. The news spread widely, and Charles Phillips, the Cambridge archaeologist, announces that the site is of national importance and gives the digging order to the Office of Works. Although they are involved, Edith asks Brown to continue his work, and he finds a gold coin. Soon, Edith decides to donate the treasure to the British Museum. Why did she do so? Did Brown get the due respect for his excavation works? The rest of the story deals with it.
