Anora is scripted and directed by Sean Baker. Alex Coco, Samantha Quan, and Sean Baker produced the film. Drew Daniels cranked the camera, and Sean Baker edited the film. Matthew Hearon-Smith composed the music. The film featured Mikey Madison, Mark Eydelshteyn, Yura Borisov, Karren Karagulian, Vache Tovmasyan, Aleksei Serebryakov, Darya Ekamasova, Lindsey Normington, Ivy Wolk, Luna Sofía Miranda, Alena Gurevich, and Sebastian Conelli.

Plot

Anora, aka Ani, is a stripper in Brooklyn. She lives in a Russian neighbourhood. Her boss introduces her to Vanya, an immature son of Nikolai Zakharov, a Russian. He was sent to the US to study but is interested in playing video games and partying. Nikolai appointed Toros and a henchman, Garnick, to look after him. Vanya plans to marry Ani to become a US citizen and to escape from his parents’ torture to study. He pays her a huge amount to make her his girlfriend. Soon, Vanya marries Ani, and his parents come to know about his relationship with Ani and decide to cancel the marriage. Toros sends Garnick and Igor to sort out the issue. Vanya leaves Ani and flees somewhere. Due to some issues in the place of marriage, Vanya’s side couldn’t cancel the marriage. Toros tells Ani that she will be paid a sum to accept the annulment. Though they searched for Vanya for a whole night, they were unable to find him. Soon, Ani finds him out in another club. What was Vanya’s reaction? Did Ani settle with Toros’ annulment deal? What happened to her? The rest of the film deals with this.

Star Performance

Mikey just lived in the character. She excels well in the scenes where Ani breaks down emotionally. Mark played his part well as Vanya. He made the audience hate him for his immature behaviour. Yura Borisov did his part well and touched the audience in the climax scene. Karren Karagulian and Vache Tovmasyan did justice to the given roles.

Analysis

The film starts on a simple note, explaining who Ani is. After Vanya is introduced and his plans are revealed the film takes a different turn. There are a lot of performance-oriented scenes given to Mikey. She is a perfect fit for this emotional story. There are a few loopholes in the story and the screenplay but they are covered up by the performances. The editing and the cinematography are good.

What’s There?

  • The performances of Mikey and Mark are the biggest pluses
  • Yura, Karren, and Vache’s characters are penned well, and they fit perfectly in the roles

What’s Not There?

  • A couple of scenes were lengthy
  • A few loopholes

Verdict

The film showcases the life of a stripper who is cheated by an immature youngster and how she feels when she gets real love. It is a good one-time watch!
