2025 began on a slightly better note for Kollywood than last year. Despite being delayed for more than a decade, ‘Madha Gada Raja’ surprised one and all to earn a whopping 50 crores worldwide, becoming the first success for Tamil cinema this year.

This is in stark contrast to 2024, where Tamil cinema embarrassed not only its audience, but also the entire nation with its unending streak of flops. Only 18 out of approximately 243 films managed to succeed at the box office, and the industry suffered a total loss of more than 1000 crores!

Forget the small filmmakers, even directors like Siruthai Siva and Shanmugam Shankar bit dust at the box office, with ‘Kanguva’ and ‘Indian 2’ turning out to be huge commercial disasters at the box office. Not even the charisma of Rajinikanth or the crowd-pulling abilities of ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay could save the sinking fortunes of Kollywood.
