Successful Indian Movies Adapted From Hollywood

Good stories are accepted everywhere, irrespective of boundaries. Here, Indian films are no exception. Indian movies have gained inspiration from Hollywood, and have been adapted to suit the taste of the audience here. Here is a list of some such Indian films which worked well with the native audience.

1. Avvai Shanmugi

This film, where a man dresses himself as a woman, just for the love towards his little girl , is inspired from the Robin Williams starrer Mrs. Doubtfire. Kamal Haasan, looked perfectly like a woman in this film.

2. Ghajini

Being adapted from the Hollywood film Memento, this film was widely received in India too. It is the story of a business tycoon turning a psychological killer. Suriya performed the role in Tamil with much gusto. The film was dubbed in Telugu and remade in Hindi (with Aamir Khan playing the lead role). The film was a smashing success in all the three languages.

3. Nayagan

This Maniratnam film, starring Kamal Haasan, is to an extent, based on the life of an underworld don of Mumbai. It is adapted from the Hollywood film The Godfather. Kamal Haasan did full justice to his role.

4. Munnabhai MBBS

Not many may know that this feel-good and inspiring movie is loosely adapted from the Robin Williams starrer Patch Adams. It revolves around the happenings in the life of a goon (Sanjay Dutt well supported by Arshad Warsi) who goes to medical college. Romance is also interspersed in this film to suit the taste of the Indian audience.

5. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar

This Hindi film is adapted from the Hollywood movie Breaking Away. It is the story of a carefree guy turning responsible by winning a boxing match. The film has Aamir Khan, playing the pivotal role and it was eventually remade in Telugu and Tamil. The film gained success in all the three languages.

6. Apoorva Sagotharargal

This movie revolves around the lives of twins (one is a dwarf) and how one avenges his father’s death. This film is adapted from the Hollywood flick Corsican Brothers and Kamal Haasan delivered exemplary performance.

7. Pyar To Hona Hi Tha

Being a remake of the English film French Kiss, this film has real life couple Ajay Devgan and Kajol, playing the lead roles. This story revolves around Kajol’s character (indeed an innocent one), who finds her true love in life, after lot of introspection.

8. Hello Brother

This Telugu film, which belongs to the genre action-comedy, deals with “reflection mentality” (the viewers of this film will understand what I mean) and has Nagarjuna, playing twin brothers. Many may not know that this is inspired from the Jackie Chan film Twin Dragons. This film is remade in Hindi as Judwaa with Salman Khan reprising Nagarjuna’s role.
