Villain is the second most important character of the movie after the hero, not even the leading lady of the film is as important as the villain, as the villain is the one who test the powers of the hero and he is the main reason for raising the status of the hero. As we all know hero is always the more loved character of the movie because of all the positivity he is associated with, but there have been instances in Bollywood when the villain of the movie became more famous than the hero, because he was so good or you can say the character was so evil that people fell in love with the character.
So let’s take a look at some of these villainous characters that stole the limelight from the hero or heroes of the movie.
1) Gabbar, ‘Sholay’
Whenever there is a talk about villains in the Bollywood, the first name that comes to mind is “Gabbar”. The role was played by
and is by far is the best role in his Bollywood career. The fear that Gabbar had over his own man and how the nearby villages were threatened by it shows how evil the character was. The character was so well written that whoever was approached for a different role other that Gabbar wanted the role of Gabbar. For me, it is one of the best negative roles ever to have been played on the Indian cinema.
2) Mogambo, Mr. India
“Mogambo Khush Hua”, this dialogue is enough to introduce one of the best negative character in the history of Bollywood. The role was performed by
and is still etched in the memory of people. Amrish Puri has done a lot of negative roles but the role of “Mogambo” stands out from all of them.
3) Shaakal, Shaan
The role was done by , and he captured the eyeballs of everyone in the nation with his evil avatar. The way he smiled and how he treated his enemies, by feeding them to shark just took the way the negative characters were being potrayed to another level.
4) Langda Tyagi, Omkara
This role can be said as the turning point of ‘’s career, this negative role showed that he possessed much more skills and is more than just a Choclate boy. In spite of power packed performance by
, the one character that remains with you even after the movie is that of Langda Tyagi. His planning and plotting just to destroy his enemies won hearts of the audiences.
5) Biku Matre, ‘
It was the film with which
Ram Gopal Varma
announced himself into the industry and the character that made him so popular was that of “Biku Matre” which was portrayed brilliantly by
. The movie has some spectacular performances by
and ‘J. D. Chakravarthy’ but still the performance that stands out among all of them is that of “Biku Matre” and i still remember the famous dialogue of his “Mumbai Ka King Kaun? Biku Matre”.
6) Kancha Cheena, ‘
There were two to choose from and i feel the latter one in which
performed the role of “Kancha Cheena” was the better of the two. The way he threatened the people of Mandwa, his way of dialogue delivery were all very good and it was one of the best performance by Sanjay Dutt. And in comparison to Danny Dengozpa from the old Agneepath he looked more fearsome than him.
, Agneepath (2012)
He was the new character that was different from the previous version of the movie. This character was portrayed by
and we have never seen him in a negative role. And the way with which he carried the character was extremely commendable. Though his screen presence was short but still was able to give an impact performance.
8) Lajja Shankar Pandey, Sangharsh
One character that was feared by every kid who saw the movie was that of "Lajja Shankar Pandey” portrayed by
. The way with which he displayed the character on screen makes us not believe that anyone would have done it better than him. The point to be noted here is that the movie also had stars like
and , but we only remember “Lajja Shankar Pandey”.
9) Dr. Dang,
This role was performed by
in the movie ‘Karma’ directed by . The role was very impactful and very well-written and the skills of Anupam Kher provided the final touches to this incredible character
10) Crime Master Gogo,
Andaz Apna Apna
Though this character was not frightening at all but still it was the negative character of the movie and if a movie having
in pivotal roles and still the character that remains etched in your memory is that of “Gogo”. Full marks goes to
for pulling off this role and performing it to perfection.
