Background music plays an important role in every movie. It is responsible not only to fill the silence but to ease the audience into the necessary state. Action scenes are accompanied by fast paced loud music, slower scenes with piano accompaniments. And sometimes, this music becomes imprinted on one’s memory for its soulfulness. The soundtrack presented a challenge as the movie centered on Japanese geishas, yet the using of Japanese traditional music would not have sat well with today’s audience. It was John Williams who finally created a hauntingly beautiful mix of both, combining both Eastern and Western styles.
The movie opens with Coldplay’s break through song Yellow, the chords flowing through the imagery and slowly weaving their way into your mind. There are several songs peppered throughout the movie by artists such as Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, Family of the Year and others. It’s interesting to note that the film has no original soundtrack but borrows from various artists to create a pleasurable mix.
