Priya was born in Pondicherry on 31st December, 1989, to Bhavani Shankar Bhavani Shankar is a Telugu film director, writer, >> Read More... and Thangam Shankar. They are natives of Mayiladuthurai. Although she began working as a software engineer for Infosys, she later quit her job to enter the mass media field.

She worked with Puthiya Thalaimurai as a Tamil News reader for several years. She left that job to start her acting career with Star Vijay. She got a lead role in Kalyanam Mudhal Kadhal Varai, which is a remake of the Hindi show 'Yeh Hai Mohabbatein' on Star Plus.

She has a B.E degree from B.S Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering College, Chennai and she finished her schooling from SBOA Matriculation and Higher Secondary School, Chennai. Her elder brother Shiv Shankar is also from the media field.
