Kovai Thambi is an Indian producer and politician who is known for his contribution to the Tamil film industry. He worked to produce some of Kollywood’s leading commercial movies in the 80s’. Kovai Thambi was born to a family of hard-working farmers in 1940. He did his schooling in Coimbatore, where he began taking an avid interest in the politics. Inspired by the politicians of his day, he began participating in several youth movements.
He was one of the initial members of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), where he went on to serve as the District Secretary for Coimbatore. Kovai Thambi moved up through the ranks and became the MLA of the Perur constituency. He later took on the office of state executive president of the Tamil Nadu Bargava Kula Sangam, a local community body. The group set up forums to train people at administrative roles and with soft skills.
His career in cinema ran in parallel with his political work. He wrote and acted in many plays during his schooling days developed in him a lifetime’s passion for the performing arts. It went on to be a great success with the audience, which led to a series of other movies being released by the studio.
Some of the most notable films produced were ‘Ilamai Kaalangal (1983),’ Idaya Kovil (1985),’ and ‘Udaya Geetham (1985).’ Between 1992 and 2008, Kovaithambi took a prolonged hiatus from the world of entertainment. He has produced over ten movies, many of which went on to become commercial successes. He remains a notable figure in politics and cinema.
