Between 2001 and 2008, he was a creative director at Real Vision Entertainment, which was followed by becoming the head of the Film Acquisition department of Zee Tamil Entertainment company from 2008 to 2015. Later, Kannan Punniyamurthy became the head of the Film Distribution department of Jazz Cinemas Chennai between 2015 and 2019. Consequently, he also attained the position of Chief Operating Officer at Lyca Productions from late 2019 to early 2021. In 2022, he joined Dhoni Entertainment as Executive Producer.
