Srimathumitha was born on 21st March in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Her father O.S. Mani is a retired chief engineer from the merchant navy and her mother Hemlata Mani is an exceptional Veena player. Her sister Charulata Mani is a famous Carnatic playback singer. Sri did her schooling in Hindu senior secondary school and high schooling at Vidhyashram high school. She completed her BCA from Meena Muthaiah College. Sri is currently pursuing her MA in Yoga for Human Excellence in Madras University.
She plays the violin and has taken piano lessons till 3rd grade. She’s married to a Chennai based software engineer Ashwin Vishwanathan. Since she was born in a family of musicians she also underwent shikshai for several years under the guidance of Smt. Savitri Satyamurthy. She’s apparently taking advanced lessons from Sri Seetharam Sharma. Her devotional inclination and her admiration of M.S. Subbulakshmiled to her bringing out her first single “Prodigy series hits of M.S. Subbulakshmi”. The CD came out when she was just 14.
She also has a strong sense of patriotism and this led to her releasing , an album which contained songs in 14 languages. Due to an avid interest in the Sanskrit shlokas she has sung many of them and this has led to HMV releasing her new collection called Hare Krishna. She performed in a concert recently at Kamarjar Arangam, Teynampet, Chennai. The concert was organized by Lakshman Shruthi Musical in association with Vijay T.V. The concert grandeur was titled – Chennaiyil Thiruvaiyaaru.
Another concert by her was ISKON Chennai between 2010 - 11 when she performed at Bhartiya Vidhya Bhavan's main auditorium. The concert was titled ‘Krishna Vatra’. The auditorium was over packed much more than it’s capacity. In 2003 she was introduced to playback singing by
; she has worked on various song by Harris Jayaraj ever since. She started as a playback singer for Cinema following the super duper hit song “Mudhal Mudhalai” from the movie Lesa Lesa. The song was a duet and the music director was Harris Jayaraj.
She completed recording for the song in 20 minutes. Sometime later she was spotted by Director Bala; singing in a harmony he asked her to sing an entire song. This resulted in her singing the song “Kanaa Kaanum Kalangal”. The song is from the movie ‘7G Rainbow Colony’ which won her the first ever singer award from Variety Cine Directory. She also won a VGP award for the same song. From the years 2003-07 she went by the name M. Madhumita and sang under the same name. However from 2007 – present, it seems that she’s been singing under the name Srimathumitha.
As a child she sang in harmony for A. R. Rahman in movies like Dil Se, ‘Lagaan’, ‘
’, Jana Gana Mana etc. She sings mainly in Tamil but has also sang songs in – Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. She has featured in two songs from the film
. The music was composed A.R. Rahman (the film won an Oscar too). She is a winner of best voice of 2002, all India best ghazal contest where she was judged by – and
among others. She has won CCRT scholarship among other things.
