Shyam Benjamin

Shyam Benjamin is a South Indian music director, composer and musician. He plays Jazz, Pop, Tamil and World music. He was born on 28th December 1979 in Tirunelveli in Tamil Nadu. Shyam started learning the harmonium since the age of five and the piano since the third grade. He attended high school at the St.Bedes Anglo Indian High School in Chennai. Shyam is an avid fan of superstar Rajinikanth and composer Illayaraja. He earned a Diploma in Music Design from the International College of Media Arts. He earned an eighth grade in theory of Western Classical Music from the Trinity College in London. He also earned a third grade in playing the Piano from the Trinity College in London. He joined the St. Mark’s Nursery And Primary School in 2000, where he teaches kindergarten kids music at his leisure. Shyam leads the World music band Zahrra and Jazz band Blue Note. He was an important part of the Bengali folk fusion band Oiykootan, Jazz and Funk band Zing, Experimental World music band Yodhaka and, the Pop and Funk Band Olodum. He was also a part of the choir group of the Madras Music Association. Shyam composed the title song of the short film Abdul Kalam which was dedicated to the late former Indian President. Shyam composed FM Signature tunes for Radio Mirchi – 8 Tunes, Rainbow FM – Breakfast Show news, City Mail, Hot Beats, Appeata Reppeata and Hello Rainbow. He also composed radio jingles for Odyssey, Bangalore Live, Indiana Cuisine Restaurant, Mainstreet and Residency Towers. Shyam worked with music director Harris Jayaraj in the movies Minnale in 2001, Vaaranam Aayiram in 2008, Adhavan in 2009, Ayan in 2009, Ko in 2011 and Engeyum Kadhal in 2011. He worked with Gopi Sunder on the Background score for the 2006 film Notebook. He worked with music director Devan Ekambaram for the 2010 movie Bale Sundaram. Shyam made his Kollywood debut as a music director with the movie Kanavu Variyam which premiered at the World Fest Houston on 9th April 2016 and went on screens on 24th February 2017. It’s music video Kalla Manna won the Silver Remi for Best Children’s Song at the World Fest Houston, the Best Youth Focus Music Video at the Bare Bones Film Fest and the Best Music Video at the Los Angeles Film And Script Festival. His next film as a music director Kalavu Thozhirchalai premiered in 2016 and will hit screens in May 2017.
